Where it came from
KanColle: Let's Meet at Sea, released in 2022, serves as the second animated season for the long-running Kantai Collection franchise, which originated as a popular web browser game featuring anthropomorphized World War II-era warships. Following the 2015 television series and the 2016 film, this sequel shifted production from Diomedéa to Studio ENGI. The series was designed to offer a more grounded and tactical narrative focus, moving away from the slice-of-life tone of its predecessors to explore the melancholic and intense atmosphere of naval warfare.
The production sought to revitalize the anime adaptation of the franchise by prioritizing action sequences and character-driven drama centered on the Abyssal Fleet conflict. While fans of the original game appreciated the technical commitment to the ship-girl aesthetic, the series received mixed reception upon its broadcast. Critics and viewers often debated the pacing and the narrative departure from the initial season, though the animation quality provided by ENGI was generally acknowledged as a distinct stylistic evolution for the series.
