Where it came from
Kangetsu Ittou: Akuryou Kiri, released in 1989, stands as a distinct entry in the late 1980s direct-to-video anime market. Produced by the studio Magic Bus, the OVA emerged during a period of prolific experimentation in the medium, characterized by the industry's focus on short-form storytelling and horror-themed supernatural narratives that targeted an older adolescent and young adult demographic.
The production reflects the stylistic hallmarks of the era, emphasizing dark, atmospheric aesthetics to suit its genre. While Magic Bus handled the animation duties, the title remains a relatively niche curiosity within the broader scope of 80s occult-themed animation. It was received as a standard genre work of its time, capturing the moody, ink-heavy artistic sensibilities that defined the period's direct-to-video horror aesthetic.
