Kangaeru jikan

Kangaeru jikan, or The Time to Think, is a 2011 documentary film directed by the Japanese filmmaker Nobuhiro Suwa. Produced within the tradition of observational cinema, the film emerged as a deliberate departure from Suwa’s narrative features, focusing on the intimate process of creative reflection. It was conceived as a contemplative exploration of artistic methodology, documenting the philosophical and practical inquiries of various creators as they grapple with the limitations and possibilities of their respective crafts.

The film is characterized by its sparse, meditative aesthetic, which prioritizes long, unhurried takes to mirror the internal rhythm of its subjects. Suwa aimed to capture the invisible space between thought and action, stripping away the artifice typically found in behind-the-scenes features. Upon its release, the film was received primarily within international film festival circuits and academic circles as a quiet, rigorous study of the human condition, earning praise for its structural restraint and its respect for the patience required in any intellectual pursuit.
