Where it came from
The Kannagi Special, released in 2009 by Aniplex, serves as a concluding bridge for the anime adaptation of Eri Takenashi's manga series. Produced by A-1 Pictures and Ordet, the special was created to wrap up the narrative threads left dangling after the television series' abbreviated run. Its production was a notable collaboration between animation studios, reflecting the industry's attempt to provide a satisfying aesthetic and emotional resolution for fans of the source material's supernatural comedy framework.
The character designs and animation style were overseen by Yuusuke Matsuo, who aimed to maintain the series' signature blend of vibrant, expressive character work and grounded, rural settings. The special was received as a bittersweet but necessary closure for the series, praised for retaining the artistic integrity of the television broadcast while polishing the final emotional beats. It remains a hallmark of late 2000s episodic anime production, marking a moment where directorial intent and studio collaboration aligned to honor the manga’s original tone.
