Where it came from
Kanon (2006) was produced by Kyoto Animation as a second television adaptation of the original 1999 visual novel by Key. Following the success of their work on Air, the studio sought to provide a more faithful and visually cohesive interpretation of the source material than the previous 2002 version. This adaptation is noted for its refined character designs and fluid animation, which established the studio's signature aesthetic for the remainder of the decade.
The series was directed by Tatsuya Ishihara, who aimed to emphasize the emotional resonance and winter-themed atmosphere of the narrative. By focusing on the interplay between the supernatural elements and the personal stories of the protagonists, the production team sought to elevate the source material into a poignant exploration of memory and loss. Upon its release, the series was well received for its high production values and remains a representative work of the late 2000s psychological drama genre.
