Where it came from
Karada Sagashi, or Body Search, originated as a serialized horror novel by Welzard before being adapted into a popular manga series by Katsutoshi Murase. In 2017, Production I.G produced a series of short ONA episodes to promote the manga's ongoing narrative. The animation style was designed to lean into the uncanny and visceral nature of the source material, utilizing a stark, atmospheric aesthetic to capture the tension of the cyclical supernatural death game faced by the protagonist and her classmates.
The ONA was received as a brief but effective visual companion to the manga's expansion in the Japanese market. By focusing on the psychological dread and the repetitive, gruesome task of locating dismembered body parts, Production I.G aimed to translate the manga's hit-or-miss horror tropes into a digestible digital format. It serves as a distinct entry in the studio's broader portfolio, highlighting their capacity to adapt niche seinen horror properties for digital distribution.
