Karakuri Circus

Karakuri Circus was produced by Studio VOLN and released in 2018 as a television adaptation of the legendary manga series by Kazuhiro Fujita. The story centers on Masaru Saiga, a young boy who inherits a massive fortune and finds himself pursued by mysterious puppet-wielding assassins, eventually joining forces with a professional puppeteer to survive. The series is celebrated for its dense, Gothic-inspired narrative and high-stakes emotional drama, qualities that made the original manga a cult classic since its serialization in the late 1990s.

The 2018 adaptation was directed by Satoshi Nishimura, who sought to condense a sprawling, multi-decade story into a single cohesive run. The visual style reflects the unique, jagged character designs characteristic of Fujita's work, which presented a significant challenge to the animation team at Studio VOLN. While fans of the original work appreciated the ambitious attempt to bring such a complex epic to the screen, the adaptation is often noted for its unconventional pacing required to fit the massive scope of the source material into the standard television format.
