The story is set in the near future not long from now, when humanity has completed an orbital elevator and begun developing the outer planets in earnest. An enigmatic extraterrestrial enemy known as "Obliquus" has set its sights on the solar system, and humanity enters a state of war with the first aliens it has encountered.
To counter the enemy's overwhelming technological superiority, the Khronos Foundation has assembled the descendants of every country's heroes from Japan's Musashi Miyamoto and Ryōma Sakamoto to France's Napoleon and Joan of Arc. The foundation then fuses the descendants with "Gear" battle suits as special biological weapons, thus giving birth to "Khronos Gear.

Where it came from
Katayoku no Khronos Gear was produced as an original video animation by G-mode in 2012, serving as a promotional adaptation for the studio's broader interactive visual novel project. Created during a period when Japanese mobile gaming studios were increasingly exploring cross-media storytelling, the work functions as a narrative expansion of the Khronos Gear universe. It was designed to bridge the gap between static mobile game assets and cinematic animation, utilizing a distinct aesthetic that reflects the character-centric tropes of the early 2010s light novel and gaming boom.
The production sought to visualize the high-stakes, clockwork-infused science fiction themes central to the series' plot. Character designs were crafted to emphasize a sense of kinetic energy and temporal manipulation, elements central to the source material's identity. While the animation was produced for a niche audience of visual novel enthusiasts, it is recognized primarily as an artifact of G-mode's efforts to establish a lasting intellectual property within the saturated Japanese mobile content market of that era.
