Where it came from
Katri, Girl of the Meadows was produced by Nippon Animation in 1984 as the tenth entry in the acclaimed World Masterpiece Theater series. Based on the 1950 Finnish novel 'Paimen, piika ja emäntä' by Auni Nuolivaara, the series follows the life of a young Finnish girl during the early 20th century as she works to support herself while awaiting her mother's return from Germany. The production was helmed by director Hiroshi Saitō, who utilized the series to explore themes of resilience, rural life, and the transition into adulthood against the backdrop of the First World War.
The aesthetic of the series is characteristic of the World Masterpiece Theater’s commitment to European-inspired pastoral animation. Character designs were handled by Shunji Saida, who focused on a grounded, expressive look that emphasized Katri’s emotional maturity and the stark beauty of the Finnish landscape. Upon its release, the series was received as a poignant addition to the studio's catalog, praised for its careful pacing and its faithful, somber adaptation of Nordic literature for a television audience.
