Kerokko Demetan

Kerokko Demetan, released in 1973 by Tatsunoko Production, is a poignant anime series directed by the visionary Yoshitaka Amano, who provided the character designs. The story follows a young frog named Demetan who moves to a new pond and faces social ostracism due to his humble origins, exploring complex themes of class struggle, prejudice, and perseverance that were somewhat darker than the typical children's programming of the era.

The series emerged during a productive period for Tatsunoko, reflecting the studio's interest in balancing whimsical character designs with deeper, often melancholic narratives. While it gained a dedicated following in Japan and later saw success in international markets under titles like Adventures of the Little Frog, its legacy is largely defined by its emotional gravity and Amano’s distinctively expressive artistic style, which marked a significant step in his transition toward becoming a legendary illustrator.
