Where it came from
Released in 1993 by Sanrio, Kero Kero Keroppi no Tomodachi wa Mahou Tsukai represents the peak of the character's popularity during the early 1990s. As part of a series of direct-to-video animations, it was produced to expand the brand's reach beyond stationery and merchandise, grounding the frog protagonist in narrative adventures designed to appeal to younger audiences through themes of friendship and magic.
The animation reflects the aesthetic standards of Sanrio's in-house studio efforts of the era, focusing on bright, high-contrast visuals and gentle storytelling tropes typical of Japanese children's media from that decade. While intended primarily for the domestic Japanese market, these OVAs helped solidify Keroppi as one of the studio's most iconic characters, marking a significant period of experimentation for Sanrio as they transitioned their characters from static stationery designs into animated media franchises.
