Where it came from
Released in 1992, Kero Kero Keroppi no Tomodachitte Ii na is an original video animation produced by Sanrio to capitalize on the rising popularity of its flagship frog character. During the early 1990s, Sanrio significantly expanded its multimedia footprint, creating direct-to-video features designed to deepen the emotional connection between children and their mascot characters through simple, moral-focused storytelling.
The production follows the established house style of Sanrio animation from this era, utilizing bright palettes and gentle character designs to emphasize themes of friendship and community. While not intended as a grand cinematic achievement, it served as a reliable staple for Sanrio’s home video library, effectively reinforcing Keroppi’s status as a top-tier character alongside Hello Kitty and Pochacco during a period of intense mascot marketing.
