Where it came from
The Kidou Senshi Gundam G40 project was conceived as a special 40th-anniversary collaboration between the Sunrise studio and the industrial designer Ken Okuyama, known for his work with Ferrari and Pininfarina. The goal was to re-imagine the iconic RX-78-2 mobile suit through the lens of industrial design, prioritizing mechanical realism and articulation. By treating the robot as a functional machine rather than just a character model, the design team emphasized natural skeletal movement and integrated kinetic joints that mimic human anatomy.
Upon its release in 2020, the project was met with significant interest from both the architectural and gunpla modeling communities. While the minimalist, high-concept aesthetic departed significantly from the traditional anime silhouette, it was celebrated as a technical achievement in engineering. The production focused on the tactile experience of the plastic model kit, which was designed to showcase Okuyama’s philosophy of form following function, resulting in a distinct, slender interpretation of a classic cultural icon.
