Where it came from
Released in 1986, Kikou Kai Galient represents the culmination of the experimental fantasy-mecha subgenre that defined the mid-1980s. Following the conclusion of the original television series, which had been criticized for its abrupt narrative pacing, this OVA project was conceived by Sunrise as a vehicle to refine and expand upon the core concepts of the Galient universe, specifically focusing on the darker, high-fantasy aesthetics that director Ryosuke Takahashi originally envisioned.
The production sought to distance itself from the limitations of the earlier TV run by leaning into a more intricate design philosophy. With character and mecha designs led by Norio Shioyama, the visuals embraced a blend of medieval armor motifs and advanced robotics. The OVA was well-received by core fans for its improved animation fidelity and the darker, more atmospheric tone that successfully realized the world-building potential that the constraints of 1980s broadcast television had previously stifled.
