Years after the Great War in Armored Trooper Votoms, Merowlink has decided to hunt down the general that tried to kill him and his squadron and take vengeance for his departed comrades. Merowlink has the unique talent of being an Armor Hunter — that is, without using mecha, he manages to take down enemy mecha by himself, with the aid of a giant mecha-killing gun and his trusty combat knife.

Where it came from
Kikou Ryouhei Merowlink, released in 1988, serves as a spin-off to the celebrated Armored Trooper Votoms franchise. Produced by Sunrise, this series deviates from the grand military themes of the original show to focus on a gritty, personal tale of revenge. The narrative follows Merowlink Ality, a soldier seeking retribution against officers who betrayed his unit, grounding the high-tech mecha setting in a more intimate and focused action-thriller framework.
The series design maintains the aesthetic cohesion of the Votoms universe, emphasizing the mechanical realism known as 'real robot' design. While the original series was created by Ryosuke Takahashi, this production explored the capabilities of the OVA format to tell a tighter story that did not require deep familiarity with the broader franchise. It is often regarded by enthusiasts as a high-quality expansion of the Votoms world that successfully prioritizes atmosphere and character-driven stakes over traditional war drama.
