Kinken Chochiku Shiobara Tasuke

Kinken Chochiku Shiobara Tasuke is a 1930 Japanese silent film directed by Kintaro Inoue and produced by the Nikkatsu studio. It belongs to the jidaigeki genre, which focuses on historical period dramas, and draws its narrative inspiration from the life of the merchant Shiobara Tasuke, a figure famously associated with stories of industry and thrift in Edo-period Japan. During this era, Japanese cinema was in a transitional period, balancing traditional theatrical storytelling techniques like the use of the benshi—a live narrator—with evolving cinematic techniques imported from the West.

The film was designed to reflect the cultural values of the time, emphasizing themes of perseverance and economic morality that resonated with audiences during the early Showa era. Directed by Inoue, a prolific figure in pre-war Japanese cinema, the production utilized the standard studio aesthetic of the Nikkatsu Kyoto studios. While it served as a piece of popular entertainment, it also functioned as a cultural vessel for moral education, presenting a serialized-style biography of a man whose rise from poverty was used as a template for public virtue.
