Provenance

Where it came from

The 1998 anime Kite was produced by the studio Arms and directed by Yasuomi Umetsu, who was also responsible for the original character design and screenplay. Conceived as a two-part original video animation series, it emerged from a period in the late 1990s when Japanese independent animation studios were exploring darker, more experimental adult-oriented narratives. Umetsu sought to blend hyper-stylized action sequences with a somber, noir-inspired atmosphere, focusing heavily on fluid movement and kinetic choreography.

Upon its release, the title gained a notable cult following among international animation enthusiasts for its technical artistry and provocative storytelling. While its reception was polarized due to its intense subject matter, critics frequently cited the precision of the animation and the distinct visual signature of the combat sequences as influential benchmarks for the genre. Its legacy persists primarily through its stylistic impact on subsequent action-oriented animation and its status as a definitive, if controversial, piece of 1990s experimental anime.
