Kite was originally released as a two-part original video animation in 1998, produced by the studio ARMS. Conceived and directed by Yasuomi Umetsu, the project emerged during a period of experimentation within the adult-oriented anime market, aiming to blend stylized, hyper-kinetic action sequences with a dark, neo-noir narrative. Umetsu, who also served as the character designer, sought to craft a visually distinct experience characterized by precise animation frames and a gritty aesthetic that stood apart from the more mainstream televised series of the late nineties.
