Kizumonogatari Part 1: Tekketsu

Kizumonogatari Part 1: Tekketsu was released in 2016 as the long-awaited cinematic adaptation of the third volume in NisiOisiN’s Monogatari light novel series. Serving as a prequel to the Bakemonogatari television series, the film depicts the pivotal encounter between high school student Koyomi Araragi and the legendary vampire Kiss-Shot Acerola-Orion Heart-Under-Blade. The production was spearheaded by Studio Shaft under the direction of Akiyuki Shinbo and Tatsuya Oishi, marking a significant shift in visual tone from the earlier television adaptations.

The film is distinguished by its experimental art style, which strips away much of the dense, text-heavy aesthetic found in previous installments in favor of a cinematic, high-contrast visual language. Tatsuya Oishi, who had previously directed the Bakemonogatari anime, aimed to translate the surrealist prose of the source material into a moody, atmospheric film experience. Upon its debut, the film was widely acclaimed by critics and fans for its bold departure from traditional anime conventions and its refined, fluid character animation.
