Where it came from
Kizuna was released in 1994 as a two-part original video animation based on the manga series by Kazuma Kodaka. Emerging during a period when the boys' love genre was beginning to gain more visibility in the Japanese animation market, the production was handled by Studio SIDO. The project sought to adapt the emotional narrative of the manga, which centered on the complex bond between two martial artists, for an audience that was increasingly interested in character-driven storytelling within the medium.
The animation style is characteristic of mid-nineties OVA productions, prioritizing intimate character interactions over high-octane action. While the series remains a niche entry in the history of anime, it holds significance as one of the earlier attempts to bring explicit romantic themes from the manga industry into the home video format. It was received primarily by fans of the source material who appreciated the effort to visualize the relationships defined by Kodaka’s original illustrations.
