Where it came from
Knights of the Zodiac: Saint Seiya Part 2 serves as the second half of the first season of the 2019 CGI remake of Masami Kurumada’s classic 1980s manga. Produced by Toei Animation and released as an ONA (Original Net Animation) through Netflix in 2020, this iteration was designed to introduce the Saint Seiya franchise to a global, contemporary audience through updated 3D animation technology and modernized storytelling beats.
The series follows Seiya and his fellow Bronze Saints as they protect the reincarnated goddess Athena, maintaining the core themes of friendship and mythological struggle found in the original source material. While the shift to a CGI aesthetic sparked significant debate among long-time fans of the 1986 hand-drawn anime, the production reflects the studio's broader effort to revitalize legacy intellectual properties for streaming platforms through high-fidelity visual effects and episodic structures tailored for modern binge-watching habits.
