Kobo-chan Special: Yakusoku no Magic Day

Kobo-chan Special: Yakusoku no Magic Day was produced by Eiken and released in 1998 as a television special extension of the long-running Kobo-chan anime series. The original manga, created by Masashi Ueda, began serialization in the Yomiuri Shimbun in 1982 and remains one of the most enduring depictions of Japanese domestic life. The series is defined by its focus on the daily interactions of the Tabata family, presented through a gentle, episodic structure that highlights traditional familial values and childhood development.

The animation style, overseen by the veteran team at Eiken, maintains the rounded, approachable aesthetic established by Ueda’s original newspaper strips. This special was crafted to fit the show's established tone of wholesome, lighthearted comedy suitable for family viewing. As part of a larger franchise that includes hundreds of television episodes and numerous theatrical and home-video shorts, this specific special reflects the late-nineties evolution of the series' character designs and animation quality, which leaned into cleaner, more vibrant color palettes than the early eighties installments.
