Kobutori

Kobutori, often titled Kobutori Jiisan, is a classic piece of Japanese folklore animation adapted into a short film by the renowned studio Toho. The film draws from the traditional Japanese folktale of the same name, which tells the story of an old man with a lump on his cheek who encounters forest spirits and is cured of his ailment, only for his greedy neighbor to fail in attempting to replicate the experience. The production is rooted in the mid-20th-century movement to adapt cultural folk tales into accessible, high-quality animation for both educational and entertainment purposes.

The artistic direction of the piece emphasizes traditional Japanese aesthetic sensibilities, blending visual storytelling techniques that evoke the feel of scroll paintings and stage theater. It was designed to preserve and revitalize domestic oral traditions during a period of rapid modernization in Japan. While it serves as an important entry in the canon of Japanese short-form animation, the film is primarily regarded today as a poignant example of the cultural conservation efforts that characterized the output of mid-century Japanese animation studios before the global rise of the modern anime industry.
