Kobo Tabata lives in a typical Japanese family. His father is a normal salary-man, his mother's a typical housewife, his grandparents (from his mother's side) help to take care of the family and it's pets, and his uncle's a slightly obese high school teacher. Still, they manage to find odd situations that sometimes arise due to Kobo's growing up process or simply because of their own habits and misunderstandings.

Where it came from
Kobo-chan Special: Yume Ippai!! was released in 1991 as a dedicated animation project based on the long-running, popular manga series by Masashi Ueda. The manga, which began serialization in 1982, centers on the everyday life of a five-year-old boy named Kobo Tabata and his multi-generational family in Tokyo. This special emerged during the height of the franchise's ubiquity in Japan, aiming to translate the observational, gentle humor of Ueda’s newspaper strip into a seasonal television format.
The production sought to maintain the clean, recognizable aesthetic of Ueda’s original character designs, which were known for their simplified, rounded features and suburban setting. Like the broader franchise, this special was designed to be wholesome family entertainment, appealing to a wide demographic ranging from children to elderly readers of the Yomiuri Shimbun. Upon release, it was received as a faithful expansion of the source material, reinforcing the character's status as a household mascot in Japanese popular culture.
