Kochira Katsushikaku Kameari Kouenmae Hashutsujo Special: Ryoutsu no Yabou! Time Slip Sengokuden

Released in 1999, this special episode belongs to the long-running Kochira Katsushikaku Kameari Kouenmae Hashutsujo franchise, commonly known as Kochikame. The series, created by Osamu Akimoto, began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1976 and became a cultural staple by depicting the daily comedic struggles of Kankichi Ryotsu, a middle-aged, eccentric police officer stationed in a humble neighborhood in Tokyo. This particular special was produced during the height of the anime's popularity in the late 1990s, when the series was firmly established as a television fixture.

The narrative premise, titled Ryoutsu no Yabou! Time Slip Sengokuden, leans into the franchise's penchant for absurd, high-concept adventures by transporting the protagonist into the Sengoku period. This design choice allowed the creative team to juxtapose Ryotsu's modern, greedy, and often blunder-prone personality against the dramatic backdrop of feudal Japan, a common trope in Shonen comedy specials of that era. Like much of the Kochikame catalog, the special was received as a lighthearted extension of the manga's enduring humor, intended to provide fans with a standalone diversion from the standard precinct-based episodic format.
