Kochira Katsushikaku Kameari Kouenmae Hashutsujo Special: Ryou-san America e Iku

Released in 1999, Kochira Katsushikaku Kameari Kouenmae Hashutsujo Special: Ryou-san America e Iku was produced as a television special based on the long-running manga series by Osamu Akimoto. The franchise, often referred to simply as Kochikame, began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in 1976 and became a cultural staple by centering its humor on the everyday antics of police officer Kankichi Ryotsu. This specific special was created to capitalize on the series' immense popularity during the late 1990s, expanding the scope of the narrative by taking the protagonist out of his familiar Tokyo beat and placing him in the unfamiliar setting of the United States.

The production sought to blend the classic slapstick comedy of the source material with the thematic contrast of American culture, a common trope for long-running Japanese anime series of that era. Osamu Akimoto’s original character designs, characterized by bold lines and expressive, hyperbolic facial features, were translated for television by the team at Studio Gallop. The special was received as a lighthearted diversion for the show’s dedicated fanbase, successfully maintaining the series' established tone while offering a change of scenery that leaned into international humor and the cultural misunderstandings inherent to the fish-out-of-water premise.
