Kochira Katsushikaku Kameari Kouenmae Hashutsujo Special: Ryou-san Saidai no Kiki! Rival wa Chakichaki Edokko

Released in 2000, this television special was produced to commemorate the ongoing success of the Kochira Katsushikaku Kameari Kouenmae Hashutsujo franchise, commonly known as Kochikame. Originating from Osamu Akimoto’s long-running manga in Weekly Shonen Jump, the series follows the comedic exploits of Kankichi Ryotsu, a middle-aged police officer stationed in a local park patrol house. This special arrived during the peak of the anime's popularity on Fuji TV, serving as an extended narrative experiment that placed the familiar, boisterous cast into a high-stakes adventure against a traditional Edokko rival.

The production sought to balance the franchise's signature slapstick humor with a more dramatic, character-driven conflict typical of feature-length animation specials of that era. Designed to appeal to both long-time manga readers and the broader television audience, the animation and scripting maintained the series' established aesthetic while refining the visual gags associated with Ryotsu's absurd schemes. Upon its broadcast, it was well-received by fans for its faithfulness to the tone of the source material and its effective expansion of the precinct's interpersonal dynamics.
