Kochira Katsushikaku Kameari Kouenmae Hashutsujo THE MOVIE 2: UFO Shuurai! Tornado Daisakusen!!

Released in 2003, this film serves as the second cinematic entry in the long-running franchise based on Osamu Akimoto’s record-breaking manga, Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen-mae Hashutsujo. Produced by Fuji TV and directed by Shinji Takamatsu, the project was designed to capitalize on the immense popularity of the television anime series, which had become a staple of Japanese Sunday evening programming. The narrative shifts the setting from the familiar streets of Katsushika to a grander scale, incorporating science fiction elements involving UFOs to provide a spectacle suitable for a theatrical release.

The film maintains the character-driven humor characteristic of the source material, focusing on the antics of the irrepressible police officer Kankichi Ryotsu. Designed to appeal to both long-time readers of the manga and younger viewers of the anime adaptation, the film utilizes a mix of traditional cel animation and early digital integration to realize its tornado-driven action sequences. Upon its release, it was received as a lighthearted extension of the series' established formula, cementing the franchise's status as a cultural fixture in Japanese media during the early 2000s.
