Koishite Iruka

Koishite Iruka, which translates to 'In Love with a Dolphin,' originated as a musical segment featured on the long-running NHK children’s program Minna no Uta. Premiering in the early 2000s, the piece was designed to blend whimsical, heartfelt storytelling with the educational and cultural mandate of public broadcasting. It became a staple of the network’s efforts to introduce gentle, narrative-driven animation to a younger audience, reflecting the station’s commitment to high-quality, family-oriented media production.

The visual identity of the segment was crafted by animators within the NHK creative ecosystem, who prioritized a soft, pastel-heavy aesthetic to complement the sentimental nature of the song. The character design of the dolphin protagonist was intended to be approachable and emotive, echoing a broader trend in Japanese animation that emphasizes relatable, anthropomorphized animal companions. Upon its release, the segment was well received for its calming tone and melodic simplicity, ultimately securing a place as a cult favorite among viewers who grew up during that era of Japanese children's programming.
