Where it came from
Koisuru Shirokuma, or 'A Polar Bear in Love,' originated as a popular web manga series by Koromo, serialized online starting in 2014. The story centers on an unlikely and humorous romantic pursuit between a polar bear and a seal. Given the series' rising popularity and its quirky, heartwarming premise, Studio Gathering produced this special edition short film in 2017 to expand the property into an animated format.
The 2017 special was directed by Kazuya Ichikawa, who sought to capture the distinct aesthetic of the original manga while leaning into the comedic timing inherent in the characters' dialogue. The design aesthetic emphasizes clean, expressive lines and a soft color palette to reinforce the gentle, absurdist tone of the narrative. Upon its release, it was well-received by fans of the source material for its faithful translation of the manga's unique humor and charm.
