Where it came from
Koisuru Shirokuma, or A Polar Bear in Love, originated as a web manga series by Koromo, serialized online starting in 2014. The story subverts traditional predator-prey dynamics by centering on a polar bear who falls in love with a seal he intends to eat, blending dark humor with a lighthearted, comedic tone. The premise gained significant traction for its gentle animation style and the poignant contrast between the bear's intense romantic overtures and the seal's perpetual state of existential dread.
The 2017 short film adaptation was produced by Studio Gathering under the direction of Kazuya Ichikawa. The production team aimed to capture the minimalist aesthetic of the original manga while utilizing a soft, pastel-toned color palette that emphasizes the ironic cuteness of the characters. Upon its release, the film was received as a charming experimental short, praised primarily for its voice acting and its ability to condense the manga's surreal, character-driven humor into a concise, episodic format.
