Komaneko: the Curious Cat

Komaneko: The Curious Cat originated as a charming stop-motion short film project by Tsuneo Goda and his studio, Dwarf. Created in 2006, the character was developed to showcase the meticulous artistry of puppetry, aiming to evoke a sense of nostalgic warmth and gentle curiosity. The project transitioned from a series of shorts into a feature-length format, gaining critical appreciation for its tactile aesthetic and the expressive, deliberate movements of the titular cat, Koma.

The design of Komaneko is rooted in the tradition of Japanese artisanal craft, emphasizing handmade textures and simple, emotive character expressions. Tsuneo Goda sought to create a character that transcended language barriers through silent storytelling and physical comedy. Upon its release, the film was celebrated at various international festivals for its high production quality and its ability to communicate profound sincerity through the medium of stop-motion animation.
