One sunny day, female kitten Koma decides to make a stop motion film. She begins to write the storyboards, make the stuffed toys, and draw the background art. Before long, Koma starts making her film — shooting frame by frame with her cute 8mm camera, and carefully checking each frame. But her shooting is interrupted by an obnoxious fly, resulting in an unexpected accident. Will she be able to complete her project?

Where it came from
Komaneko: The First Step originated as a stop-motion short film produced by TYO Animations, spearheaded by director Tsuneo Goda. Goda, already renowned for creating the Domo-kun character, developed Komaneko to explore the tactile, whimsical potential of handmade puppet animation. The film centers on a curious kitten named Koma who aspires to become a filmmaker, reflecting the painstaking craftsmanship and analog dedication inherent in the stop-motion process itself.
The character design emphasizes a soft, endearing aesthetic that contrasts with the technical precision required for frame-by-frame movement. Upon its release, the film was celebrated for its gentle pacing and the expressive nature of its puppets, leading to a series of subsequent shorts and feature-length expansions. Critics and audiences largely received the work as a hallmark of modern Japanese independent animation, praised for its sincerity and the warmth of its visual storytelling.
