Koro's Big Day Out

Koro's Big Day Out, known in Japanese as Koro no Daisanpo, was created in 2001 by Studio Ghibli specifically for exclusive screenings at the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Tokyo. As one of the museum's rotating short films, it was conceived as a lighthearted, dialogue-free experience intended to appeal to the younger visitors of the museum. The short tells the story of a puppy who wanders away from his owner, leading to a series of simple yet whimsical adventures in a suburban setting.

The film was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, who utilized a distinct, minimalist animation style that contrasts with the studio's feature-length epics. Miyazaki focused on conveying the curiosity and sensory experience of a small animal, eschewing complex narrative arcs in favor of atmospheric storytelling. The film remains a rare curiosity within the Ghibli canon, as it has never received a traditional home media release or theatrical distribution outside of the museum, cementing its status as a piece of site-specific art.
