Where it came from
Produced by Studio AIC in 2002, Koroshiya 1: The Animation Episode 0 serves as a prequel to the controversial live-action film Ichi the Killer, which was directed by Takashi Miike. The animation was developed to explore the origins of the titular assassin, Ichi, prior to the events of the main narrative, leaning heavily into the visceral and psychological themes established by Hideo Yamamoto’s original manga series.
The visual design reflects the gritty, transgressive aesthetic of early 2000s extreme horror anime, prioritizing a bleak atmosphere to mirror the source material's darker tone. Upon its release, the production was met with a polarized reception; while fans of the manga appreciated the expanded backstory, critics and general audiences often found the uncompromising violence and jarring shifts in animation quality difficult to reconcile with the stylistic flair of its live-action counterpart.
