This is the tale of Kum Kum, a kind of prehistoric "Dennis the Menace" who lived long ago. He and his family and friends belonged to a tribe of Mountain People who lived and hunted and farmed high in the hills near the Fire Mountain.
This is a comedy series earmarked by infectious chibi-cuteness mixed with the pathos of every-day prehistoric life. The storylines revolves around the adventures of Kum Kum (pronounced coom-coom) and his young friends. Kum Kum has a real knack for getting himself (and the other kids) in trouble and that's what makes the series fun!

Where it came from
Kum Kum, also known as Kum-Kum the Mischievous Boy, was produced by Sunrise and first aired in 1975. The series emerged during a period of experimentation in Japanese animation, focusing on the daily lives and adventures of a young caveboy in a prehistoric setting. It stands as a notable early work from the studio that would later become a powerhouse in the industry, reflecting a lighter, episodic storytelling style common to mid-70s children's programming.
The character design was overseen by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko, who later gained immense fame for his work on Mobile Suit Gundam. In creating Kum Kum, the design team aimed to produce a charming, relatable protagonist whose interactions with his community could serve as a vehicle for simple moral lessons. While it did not reach the global fame of some contemporaries, it was well-received as a wholesome and imaginative addition to the canon of vintage family-oriented anime.
