Kumi is a little girl who lives in a world with sparkling metal skyscrapers, and where robots support everything. Kumi's playground is a garden by one of those skyscrapers with a man-made water fountain, artificial vegetation, and digital water and butterflies. Kumi meets an old man who visits the park every day to paint the artificial flowers. The old man tells Kumi of when he discovered a "breathing" tulip sprouting amidst the artificial flowers, and the two decide to watch over the tulip together as it grows.

Where it came from
Kumi to Tulip was produced by Tezuka Productions in 2015 as an animated short film. The project was conceived as an adaptation of an early manga story by Osamu Tezuka, originally published in 1957. The work serves as a tribute to the foundational period of Tezuka's career, highlighting his early illustrative style and his enduring interest in themes of friendship and innocence.
The film was directed by Masanori Miura and was primarily intended for screening at the Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum in Takarazuka, Japan. The design team sought to maintain a visual aesthetic that felt faithful to Tezuka's original mid-century manga panels while incorporating the fluidity of modern digital animation. Upon its release, it was received as a gentle, nostalgic piece that offered contemporary audiences a window into the formative creative instincts of the man known as the godfather of manga.
