Provenance

Where it came from

Released in 2002 as a short film exclusively for the Ghibli Museum in Mitaka, Japan, Kuusou no Sora Tobu Kikaitachi—or 'Imaginary Flying Machines'—was directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The film was conceived as a centerpiece for the museum's permanent collection, reflecting Miyazaki's lifelong fascination with early aviation, Jules Verne-inspired aesthetics, and the romanticism of human flight. It serves as a visual essay that explores both real-world aeronautical history and the whimsical, intricate designs that have permeated his feature-length films.

The animation style is distinctively Miyazaki, utilizing hand-drawn techniques to capture the mechanical complexity of steam-powered ornithopters and multi-winged aircraft. In the short, Miyazaki himself provides the voice for the narrator, a pig-like aviator character, which adds an intimate, autobiographical quality to the piece. Upon its debut, the short was praised by animation critics and museum visitors for its technical craftsmanship and its ability to condense the director's signature wonder into a brief, meditative experience, solidifying its place as a quintessential piece of Ghibli heritage.
