An educational film about the Kuzuryuu River in Japan. It starts out in the Meiji Era where the villages along it kept getting plagued by floods. The villagers prayed for it to stop but it did nothing. A young boy who lost his childhood friend to the floods grows up into a man and decides to take matters into his own hands. He starts constructing an embankment which leads to a village-wide project which spread to other villages along the river.

Where it came from
Kuzuryuugawa to Shounen, or The Kuzuryu River and the Boy, was produced by Mushi Production in 1998 as an educational animation project. It emerged from the studio's long-standing commitment to creating socially conscious and environmentally focused media, a legacy firmly rooted in the philosophy of its founder, Osamu Tezuka. The film was commissioned to highlight the ecological importance and historical significance of the Kuzuryu River, aiming to foster a sense of stewardship among younger audiences regarding local Japanese geography and nature.
The artistic direction for this production was crafted to align with the soft, accessible aesthetic typical of Mushi Production's later educational works, prioritizing narrative clarity and gentle visuals to engage its target demographic. By blending environmental storytelling with a child-centric perspective, the project sought to bridge the gap between regional activism and cultural media. Upon its release, it was primarily utilized within regional educational circuits and at environmental awareness events, earning recognition as a sincere effort to document local heritage through the medium of animation.
