Where it came from
Kyoufu! Zombie Neko, or Terror! Zombie Cat, emerged in 2015 as a short-form television series produced by Kachidoki Studio. Designed to capitalize on the popularity of bizarre and darkly comedic character-driven animation in Japan, the series centers on the titular feline character who wanders a desolate landscape in search of friends after being brought back to life. The series is part of a wave of experimental, low-budget animation projects designed for late-night viewing and short-format viral consumption.
The aesthetic of the series is intentionally rough and surreal, leaning into a minimalist animation style that highlights the absurdity of the zombie cat's existential plight. By utilizing simple designs and repetitive visual gags, the studio aimed to create a distinct, meme-ready presence that would resonate with online communities. While the series gained a niche cult following among enthusiasts of unconventional avant-garde anime, it remains an obscure entry in the broader landscape of mid-2010s Japanese web and television shorts.
