Where it came from
Kyoukaisen, formally known as Kyoukaisen-jou no Horizon, is a seminal light novel series written by Minoru Kawakami and illustrated by Satoyasu. Serialized starting in 2008, the series is renowned for its immense scale and dense, complex world-building. It is set in a distant future where humanity has retreated from a ruined Earth to a pocket dimension inside a massive flying city, structured to mirror the historical events of the Sengoku period as a means of recreating human history to find a way back to the surface.
The design of the series is characterized by its exhaustive attention to detail and a unique aesthetic blending high-fantasy technology with historical motifs. Satoyasu’s illustrations were instrumental in translating Kawakami’s intricate conceptualizations into a distinct visual identity that anchors the sprawling cast. Upon its release, the series garnered a dedicated cult following, praised by readers for its narrative ambition and criticized by some for the daunting technical density of its lore and prose.
