Where it came from
La Blue Girl Returns was produced by Studio ARMS and released in 2001 as a continuation of the long-running erotic horror franchise based on the manga by Toshio Maeda. This series emerged during a period of intense proliferation for the adult OVA market in Japan, serving as a late-era revival that sought to capitalize on the established popularity of the original occult and supernatural themes first introduced in the late 1980s.
The animation style and direction for this entry reflect the transition of the ARMS studio as they moved toward more polished digital character designs while retaining the gothic and fantastical aesthetic of the source material. It was designed to cater to a dedicated fan base familiar with the dark fantasy tropes of the franchise, though it arrived at a time when the broader market for adult-oriented animation was undergoing significant shifts in distribution and stylistic expectations.
