Lao Fu Zi Shui Hu Zhuan

Lao Fu Zi Shui Hu Zhuan, also known as Old Master Q and Water Margin, was released in 1982 as an animated feature film. It serves as a creative adaptation of the classic Chinese novel Water Margin, reimagined through the lens of Alfonso Wong’s iconic comic strip character, Old Master Q. The film was produced during a period when the Old Master Q franchise was at the height of its popularity in Hong Kong, acting as a bridge between traditional literary heritage and the burgeoning medium of local animation.

The film was directed by Wu-Liang Hu and features the distinct visual style synonymous with Wong’s characters, characterized by simple, expressive lines and slapstick humor. The narrative device involves Old Master Q and his companions being transported into the world of the classic heroes of the Liangshan Marsh. Upon its release, it was noted for its attempt to blend historical adventure with the contemporary, comedic sensibilities of the source comic, marking a significant entry in the history of Hong Kong's domestic animation industry.
