Laughing Under the Clouds: Gaiden Part 2

Laughing Under the Clouds: Gaiden Part 2, titled 'Tragedy of the Cherry Blossom in Bloom,' was produced by Wit Studio as the second installment in a three-part film trilogy. Released in 2018, this series serves as a direct spin-off and prequel to the original Donten ni Warau manga and anime series, focusing on the history of the Kumo brothers and the tumultuous Meiji era. The studio adapted these stories to provide deeper insight into the characters' pasts, specifically the events leading up to the main narrative arc.

The production sought to maintain the visual intensity associated with Wit Studio, characterized by dynamic action sequences and a somber, historical aesthetic. The design approach focuses on the melancholic transition of Japanese society during the late 19th century, utilizing fluid animation to depict the martial prowess of the Kumo family. Upon its release, the film was received primarily by the established fan base of the franchise, serving as a supplement that enriched the lore of the original series while balancing character drama with thematic exploration of duty and sacrifice.
