Where it came from
Laughing Under the Clouds: Gaiden Part 3, titled 'Sakka-cho no Chikai', was produced by Wit Studio and released in 2018 as the final installment of a cinematic trilogy. These films serve as a narrative expansion to the original manga series by Kemuri Karakara, focusing on the history and personal struggles of the Kumo brothers during the Meiji period. The project was designed to offer fans a more intimate look at the characters' backstories, bridging the gap between the primary series' themes of loyalty and the shifting political landscape of historical Japan.
The production utilized Wit Studio's signature clean, fluid animation style to translate the intricate character designs from the source material into a theatrical format. By moving away from the main television series' episodic structure, the trilogy allowed the creators to lean into a more dramatic, somber tone. Critics generally regarded the final part as a satisfying conclusion to the Gaiden project, noting that it successfully balanced the heavy historical stakes with the established emotional bond of the protagonists.
