Based on a picture book by the late fashion icon Yves Saint-Laurent. Saint-Laurent originally created the cartoons in his picture book in 1956, when he was a 20-year-old working for the Christian Dior haute couturier. The cartoons follow the bizarre fantasies of a mischievous girl named Lulu.

Where it came from
La Vilaine Lulu was originally created by fashion designer Yves Saint Laurent in 1956, initially intended as a private amusement for his friends. The character, a mischievous and anarchic young girl, served as a satirical counterpoint to the polished world of haute couture that defined the artist's professional life. The 2009 special edition represents a resurgence of interest in these early sketches, preserving the raw, unpolished charm of the original ink-and-watercolor compositions.
The 2009 release aimed to introduce a new generation to the irreverent humor and dark wit inherent in Saint Laurent's illustrations. The book showcases a visual style that prioritizes bold, spontaneous strokes and a cynical narrative tone, reflecting the artist's deep appreciation for the grotesque and the absurd. Critical reception upon the work's wider circulation lauded it as an essential insight into the multifaceted creativity of a man primarily known for his structured approach to garment design.
