Where it came from
Let's Arbeit! is a surreal, experimental OVA produced by the Japanese animation studio ChiChinoya and released in 2010. Created during a period of niche independent production, the work is characteristic of the studio’s signature style, which frequently blurs the lines between traditional cel-shaded aesthetic and bizarre, non-linear digital storytelling. It functions as a meta-commentary on the repetitive nature of labor, framed through the surrealist lens that defines the studio’s portfolio.
The project was spearheaded by the core creative team at ChiChinoya, who sought to challenge conventional narrative structures within the short-form animation medium. By utilizing a distinct, often jarring visual palette and repetitive motifs, the animators aimed to evoke the existential fatigue associated with the modern workplace. While the piece remained largely confined to experimental animation circles, it is regarded by enthusiasts of avant-garde anime as a notable example of independent Japanese production from the turn of the decade.
