Little Nemo Pilot (1984)

The Little Nemo pilot was produced by Tokyo Movie Shinsha in 1984 as a proof-of-concept for a feature film adaptation of Winsor McCay's influential early 20th-century comic strip, Little Nemo in Slumberland. The project sought to modernize the surreal, dream-based imagery of the source material through high-quality cel animation, aiming to capture the whimsy and scale of the original strips for a new generation of international audiences.

The pilot featured the artistic contributions of renowned animators, including Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata, who were briefly attached to the project before their departure. While the pilot was ultimately not representative of the final 1989 film’s aesthetic, it is celebrated by animation historians for its experimental approach to integrating western comic styles with traditional Japanese animation techniques, effectively signaling the industry's growing interest in big-budget, globalized animation efforts during the mid-1980s.
