Where it came from
Released in 1981, this animated adaptation of Louisa May Alcott's classic novel was produced by the Japanese studio Kokusai Eigasha. The series emerged during a period of significant Japanese interest in Western literary classics, aimed at bringing quintessential international stories to a new generation through the medium of cel animation. It sought to capture the earnest, domestic spirit of the March family while navigating the logistical challenges of translating a 19th-century American narrative into a serialized format for Japanese television.
The character designs and visual direction were crafted to evoke a sense of nostalgic warmth, emphasizing soft color palettes and expressive, grounded character movements. While it followed the Kokusai Eigasha tradition of faithful adaptation, it occupied a distinct space in the landscape of early 1980s television. Though often overshadowed by later, more prominent anime adaptations of the same source material, it remains a notable example of the studio's commitment to educational and literary animation during that era.
