Where it came from
The 1980 special Little Women, produced by Toei Animation, emerged during a peak era for Japanese animation adaptations of classic Western literature. Created as a standalone feature, it sought to distill Louisa May Alcott’s seminal novel for a television audience, reflecting the period's cultural appetite in Japan for wholesome, serialized storytelling based on international literary canon.
The character design and visual direction were crafted to evoke a nostalgic, storybook sensibility consistent with Toei’s house style of the late 1970s and early 1980s. While intended as a faithful condensation of the March sisters' formative years, the production is frequently noted by scholars of anime history as a precursor to the more expansive World Masterpiece Theater adaptations that would eventually define the genre's approach to Victorian-era narratives.
